No Classes Until Further Notice As Teachers Resume Strike

Published by Revolver Junior on 6 April 2021.

The national executive committee of the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has announced a national wide stay away strike which has resumed today on 6th April 2021.

According to a document seen by Malawi Hits, the TUM president Mr Willy Malimba wrote to alert all teachers serving in both public primary schools and secondary school as well as Teachers Training College (TTC) lecturers not to report for duties on 6th April 2021 until the government fix their demand of getting Covid-19 allowances in form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“We gave the government 7 days to sort us out on Covid 19 allowance, now that the 7 days period we gave the government has expired we shall start a stay away strike,” reads part of the document signed by Mr Willy Malimba.

A few weeks ago TUM announced a country wide stay away strike which was called-off after a discussion with government officials. They agreed to provide public schools teachers with Covid-19 allowances in form of PPEs.

However the Government through the ministry of education did not act immediately, a development which led TUM issue a 7 day warning for this stay away strike which has resumed today.
